The Dutton Ranch picks up right after the events of the Yellowstone series finale. With the original Yellowstone Ranch sold to the Indian Nation, Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton begin a new chapter of their lives. They relocate to a new ranch โ about 7,000 acres โ while dealing with the aftermath of their past battles and losses.
Rip and Beth return as central characters, and their adopted son Carter is also part of their journey. Beth, haunted by whatโs happened, is determined to protect what remains of their legacy. Rip supports her and helps hold things together as they build a new home and life.
The spinโoff introduces new challenges: not just internal family struggles, but external pressures. There are powerful ranch owners (such as Beulah Jackson) in Texas who become rivals. The harsh realities of maintaining land in modern times โ legal, financial, environmental, social pressures โ create friction. Beth and Rip must navigate these while trying to give Carter the upbringing he needs.

The show continues many themes that were core to Yellowstone: loyalty, land ownership, legacy, sacrifice, and the cost of protecting oneโs home. But here, there is also a sense of renewal: they are rebuilding, redefining what family and โhomeโ mean. Thereโs tension between preserving tradition and adapting to new realities. Everything they do comes with high risk โ emotionally, materially, even morally.

As of 2025, the show has been officially greenโlit, with Kelly Reilly (Beth), Cole Hauser (Rip), Finn Little (Carter) returning. Annette Bening and Ed Harris also join the cast. The showrunner is Chad Feehan, working under creator Taylor Sheridan. Although originally expected late 2025, the premiere has been delayed into 2026.
