Only the Brave (2017) is a biographical drama directed by Joseph Kosinski and based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a group of elite firefighters who risk their lives battling wildfires. The film is adapted from the GQ article “No Exit” by Sean Flynn and features an ensemble cast including Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Connelly, and Taylor Kitsch.

Set in Prescott, Arizona, the film follows Eric Marsh (Josh Brolin), the superintendent of the local fire department, as he fights to have his crew certified as Hotshotsโ€”a prestigious designation for elite firefighters who operate on the front lines of wildfires. Marsh is a passionate and dedicated leader who believes in the potential of his team, despite their lack of recognition and resources.

Brendan McDonough (Miles Teller), a young man struggling with addiction and searching for redemption, joins the team after learning he’s about to become a father. Initially dismissed as a liability by some members of the crew, McDonough, nicknamed “Donut,” earns their trust through hard work and determination.

As the Granite Mountain Hotshots gain their certification and take on increasingly dangerous assignments, the film delves into their camaraderie, personal sacrifices, and the toll their demanding work takes on their families. Eric’s wife, Amanda (Jennifer Connelly), struggles with the strain his job places on their marriage, while other team members navigate their own challenges.

The film culminates in the Yarnell Hill Fire of 2013, one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history. The Granite Mountain Hotshots confront the blaze with courage and selflessness, but tragedy strikes when 19 of the 20 crew members lose their lives. Brendan, who was assigned to a lookout position away from the main group, is the sole survivor.

Praised for its heartfelt storytelling, realistic portrayal of firefighting, and strong performances, Only the Brave received critical acclaim. The film was commended for its respect and sensitivity toward the real-life events and individuals it depicts, offering an emotionally powerful tribute to the Granite Mountain Hotshots.
