Monsoon (2019) is a British drama film directed by Hong Khaou, following the emotional journey of Kit (Henry Golding), a young Vietnamese-British man who returns to Vietnam after being raised in the UK. The story begins with Kit arriving in Ho Chi Minh City, where he feels both disconnected and out of place in his homeland, which he hasnβt visited since being evacuated as a child during the Vietnam War.

As Kit navigates the city, he reflects on his past, including the loss of his parents, who were killed in the war. He begins to reconnect with his roots, and through his journey, he explores what it means to be Vietnamese, as well as the complexities of identity and the passage of time. Kit is also searching for the ashes of his parents, which he intends to scatter in the countryside as a final act of closure and remembrance.

Throughout his trip, Kit meets several people, including an expatriate named Lewis (Parker Sawyers), and begins to explore the deep emotional currents of longing, grief, and the desire for connection. Kit and Lewis form a bond that reflects themes of loneliness and the search for meaning amidst a rapidly changing world.

Monsoon is a meditative and introspective film, dealing with themes of memory, loss, and reconciliation. The narrative is not just about Kitβs journey to Vietnam but also about his personal exploration of belonging, confronting the past, and finding peace. The film captures the beauty and contrasts of Vietnam, using the monsoon as a metaphor for Kitβs emotional turmoil and his evolving understanding of himself and his heritage.
