Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is a 2009 dark fantasy action film and the third installment in the Underworld series. Unlike its predecessors, this film takes a prequel approach, delving into the backstory of the centuries-long war between Vampires and Lycans. Directed by Patrick Tatopoulos, it explores themes of oppression, rebellion, and tragic love, making it a pivotal chapter in the Underworld saga.
The film takes place in a medieval setting, centuries before the events of Underworld (2003). At this time, vampires, led by the cold and tyrannical elder Viktor (Bill Nighy), dominate the world, enslaving werewolves and forcing them to guard their fortress during daylight hours.

Lucian (Michael Sheen), the first Lycan, is born to a feral werewolf mother but possesses a unique ability: he can transform between human and wolf forms at will. Recognizing the potential in Lucian, Viktor spares his life and raises him as a slave, ultimately breeding him to create a new race of Lycans who are loyal to the vampires.
As Lucian grows, he falls in love with Viktorβs daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), a fierce and independent vampire warrior. Despite the rigid caste system and Viktorβs hatred for interspecies relationships, Lucian and Sonja carry on a forbidden romance in secret.
When Lucian discovers the vampiresβ true intentionsβto enslave the Lycans foreverβhe begins to question his loyalty. His anger grows after Sonja becomes pregnant with his child. Viktor, upon learning of their affair, views it as a betrayal and sentences Sonja to death for treason.
Lucian rallies the Lycans, along with feral werewolves, to rise against the vampires. This marks the beginning of the Lycansβ rebellion and the first major battle of the centuries-long war. During a climactic confrontation, Sonja sacrifices herself to save Lucian, knowing that her fatherβs wrath would endanger their child and the rebellion. Her death pushes Lucian into a rage, solidifying his role as the leader of the Lycan uprising.
The film concludes with Lucian leading his kind to freedom, declaring war against the vampires, and promising revenge for Sonjaβs death. This rebellion sets the stage for the events in the subsequent Underworld films.
Upon release, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans garnered mixed reviews. Critics praised the performances of Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy, noting their commanding presence and ability to elevate the material. Rhona Mitraβs portrayal of Sonja was also widely appreciated for its strength and emotional depth.
