The Worst Witch (2017–2020) is a family fantasy television series based on the popular book series by Jill Murphy. The show was developed by Emma Reeves and aired on CBBC in the UK and Netflix internationally. It is a whimsical, magical tale that follows the adventures of Mildred Hubble (played by Bella Ramsey in the early seasons and later Lydia Page), a young girl who stumbles into a world of magic and enrolls in Cackle’s Academy, a school for witches.

Despite being from a non-magical background, Mildred is welcomed into the academy, where she quickly earns a reputation as β€œthe worst witch” due to her clumsy nature and knack for getting into trouble. Alongside her loyal friends Maud Spellbody (Meibh Campbell, later replaced by Megan Hughes) and Enid Nightshade (Tamara Smart), Mildred faces challenges that test her courage, resourcefulness, and budding magical skills.

The show is packed with enchanting spells, mischievous escapades, and life lessons. It explores themes of friendship, self-discovery, and perseverance. While Mildred struggles to keep up with her peers, she proves time and again that her determination, kindness, and creativity make her a truly special witch. Throughout the series, she clashes with her stern teacher, Miss Hardbroom (Raquel Cassidy), and deals with the antagonistic Ethel Hallow (Jenny Richardson), a snobbish and talented student.

The Worst Witch combines humor, heart, and magic, making it a delightful watch for children and families. It garnered praise for its engaging storylines, diverse cast, and empowering messages, becoming a modern adaptation that introduced the beloved book series to a new generation.
