Orca (1977) is a classic eco-thriller and revenge drama directed by Michael Anderson and produced by Dino De Laurentiis. Often compared to Jaws (1975), the film follows the story of a killer whale, or orca, seeking vengeance after a traumatic encounter with humans. Despite being overshadowed by its shark-based predecessor, Orca is notable for its emotional depth, haunting musical score, and its attempt to explore themes of grief, guilt, and the natural worldβs retaliation against human cruelty.

Captain Nolan (played by Richard Harris) is a grizzled fisherman working off the coast of Newfoundland. Driven by greed, he hopes to capture a killer whale and sell it to an aquarium for profit. During a hunt, Nolanβs harpoon injures a female orca, who becomes entangled in his shipβs rigging. Tragically, the female whale is pregnant, and she miscarries on deck in a deeply disturbing and emotional scene. Heartbroken, her mate (the male orca) watches helplessly as she succumbs to her injuries and is dumped into the sea.
What follows is a gripping tale of revenge. The male orca, intelligent and fiercely protective, begins a calculated and relentless pursuit of Nolan. He terrorizes the fishermanβs village, destroying boats and attacking people, including one of Nolanβs crew members. Driven by grief and anger, the orca is determined to confront Nolan, dragging the captain into a life-or-death battle.
Nolan, meanwhile, begins to feel remorse for his actions. Haunted by the orcaβs loss and his own past traumaβthe death of his wife and unborn childβhe starts to empathize with the creatureβs grief. Despite this growing awareness, Nolan feels compelled to face the orca in a final confrontation.
The climactic showdown takes place in icy waters. Nolan and his crew venture into the open sea, where the orca lures them to the Arctic. In a dramatic sequence, the orca destroys Nolanβs ship and strands him on an ice floe. In a chilling final act of vengeance, the orca causes Nolan to fall into the freezing water, leaving him to drown before disappearing into the distance.
Upon release, Orca received mixed reviews. Critics drew inevitable comparisons to Jaws, with some dismissing it as an inferior imitation. However, others praised the film for its emotional depth and unique perspective. Over the years, Orca has gained a cult following for its ambitious attempt to tell a revenge story from the perspective of an animal.
