โ€œThe Thing About Harryโ€ is a charming, groundbreaking romantic comedy that aired on Freeform on February 15, 2020. Directed and co-written by Peter Paige, the film combines heartfelt humor, lovable characters, and authentic LGBTQ+ representation. As one of the first mainstream romantic comedies centered on a same-sex relationship, it blends familiar rom-com tropes with a fresh, inclusive perspective, making it a standout in modern LGBTQ+ cinema.

The story follows Sam Baselli (played by Jake Borelli), a reserved and somewhat neurotic young man living in Chicago, and Harry Turpin (played by Niko Terho), his charming, confident, and free-spirited high school nemesis.

The Road Trip

Sam is reluctantly forced to give Harry a ride to their mutual friendโ€™s engagement party in Missouri. The tension between them is palpable as Sam has harbored resentment toward Harry since high school, believing Harry to be a popular, straight bully. During the drive, Harry surprises Sam by casually revealing that he is pansexual, shattering Samโ€™s preconceptions about him.

Despite the awkwardness, the two begin to bond over shared experiences and perspectives on love, life, and relationships. However, their journey is cut short when Harry, in typical carefree fashion, asks Sam to detour and pick up a hitchhiking group of Harryโ€™s friends, leading to more humorous and chaotic moments.

Friendship and Connection

After the road trip, Sam and Harry develop an unexpected friendship. Their dynamic becomes the heart of the film, with Samโ€™s guarded, cynical personality contrasting Harryโ€™s optimistic, spontaneous approach to life. Through their interactions, Sam begins to see Harry in a new light, and a genuine connection starts to form.

At the same time, Samโ€™s best friend, Stasia (played by Britt Baron), supports him as he struggles with his feelings for Harry. Stasia encourages Sam to open himself up to the possibility of love, even if it means risking heartbreak.

Romantic Tensions

The film explores the ups and downs of their evolving relationship. Harryโ€™s flirtatious nature and Samโ€™s fear of vulnerability create emotional tension, as Sam struggles to believe that Harry could truly reciprocate his feelings. Their friendship becomes complicated when Harry begins dating someone else, leaving Sam to wrestle with his jealousy and feelings of rejection.

Through various twists and turns, including heartfelt confessions, misunderstandings, and moments of vulnerability, the two must confront their own insecurities and decide if they are willing to take a leap of faith and pursue a romantic relationship.

The Grand Gesture

In classic rom-com fashion, the story builds to a climactic moment where Sam and Harry confront their feelings. Harry makes a bold, heartfelt gesture, confessing his love for Sam and proving his commitment. Sam, finally ready to embrace his own emotions and trust Harry, reciprocates. The film concludes with the two of them sharing a romantic kiss, symbolizing their journey from high school enemies to lovers.
